Introduction to 3d printing technology

3D printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing, or AM, is an advanced manufacturing technique that builds objects by stacking materials layer by layer. Unlike traditional Subtractive Manufacturing methods, 3D printing allows building objects layer-by-layer from a digital model, enabling the fabrication of highly customized and complex structures.

Digital model Design

The first step in 3D printing is to create or acquire a digital model, usually designed using Computer aided design (CAD) software. The model can include geometry, structural information, and other manufacturing-related data.

Slicing

The digital model is cut into thin layers, which is a key step in 3D printing. Slicing software breaks down the digital model into many horizontal slices so that the 3D printer can build the object layer by layer.

Material Selection

3D printing can use a variety of materials, including plastics, metals, ceramics, biomaterials, etc. Different materials are suitable for different applications and there is a wide range of options from prototyping to final product manufacturing.

Printing process

The printing process typically involves melting, hardening, or gluing the material, depending on the 3D printing technology used. Common 3D printing techniques include:

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

The use of fused plastic filaments, stacked layer by layer through a nozzle, is one of the most common 3D printing techniques.

Stereolithography (SLA)

The use of UV-curing liquid photosensitive resins that are hardened layer by layer by laser or projected light.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

The use of lasers to sinter powdered materials (typically plastic or metal) layer by layer.

Selective Laser Melting (SLM)

Similar to SLS, but uses a laser to melt metal powder.

Post-processing

After completing 3D printing, post-processing steps such as removal of support structures, surface polishing, painting, etc. may be required to ensure that the final product meets the requirements.
